Vic: Fines jump for planning breaches = 2

The Municipal Association of Victoria said the changes were long overdue and a "watershed
for planning in Victoria".

"The changes are consistent with the continued empowerment of local government in dealing
with issues affecting their local communities," association president Brad Matheson said.

The increase in maximum penalties for planning breaches sent a strong message to magistrates
that the government considered them serious offences, he said.

"Local government will be closely monitoring the application of these penalties to
ensure they reflect the serious nature of the offence," Mr Matheson said.
