The NSW Government has declined to support or oppose a new nuclear reactor in Sydney'ssouth until it has more information on safety risks.

Federal Science Minister PETER MCGAURAN's announced a licence has been granted to buildthe $300 million replacement reactor at Lucas Heights for medical, scientific and industrialuse.

A spokesman for NSW Environment Minister BOB DEBUS says the government has asked formore information about the transport and storage of nuclear waste from the replacementreactor.

The Commonwealth has not yet announced where it will put the radioactive byproduct.

The spokesman says the NSW government raised a number of concerns in its submissionto the environmental impact statement process, including safety and the plan for disposalfor nuclear waste.

Greens state MP LEE RHIANNON has condemned the state government's silence over thenuclear facility, saying it's negligent to allow Sydney to be endangered by the new reactor.
