Fed: Australians to spend 4.5mil hrs on phone this Christmas Day

Telstra says it expects Australians will spend more than four and a half million hourson the telephone on Christmas Day.

The phone company says it's gearing up for a record number of calls.

Telstra analysis shows close to 700,000 outgoing international calls will be made fromAustralia, with the UK, USA and New Zealand being the most popular call destinations.

The number of STD calls made from Australian households will be almost double thatmade on an average day, and approximately 13.25 million locals calls would be made.

Telstra spokesman MICHAEL ROCCA says while Telstra is prepared to meet the extra demand,people should try to avoid peak calling periods.
