STEMKE IS GUY FINALIST


University of Wisconsin senior Kevin Stemke is one of three finalists for the Ray Guy Award, presented annually to college football's top punter. Stemke ranked third in the country and second in the Big Ten Conference this season with an average of 44.8 yards per punt. Minnesota sophomore Preston Gruening, a Schofield native, led the nation and the Big Ten with an average of 45.2 yards per punt.
The other finalist is California senior Nick Harris, who is 31st in the country at 41.5 yards per punt. The winner will be announced Dec. 7.
Pinkel makes it official
Missouri hired Toledo coach Gary Pinkel on Thursday, signing him to a five-year contract worth about $900,000 per year.
Pinkel, 48, replaces Larry Smith, who was fired after going 33-46-1 in seven seasons.
UW defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove interviewed for the job.
* Memphis defensive coordinator Tommy West was promoted to head coach. West, 46, replaces Rip Scherer.
* Miami (Fla.) defensive coordinator Greg Schiano was hired to coach Rutgers. Schiano, 34, replaces Terry Shea.
Casey will sue
Penn State quarterback Rashard Casey intends to sue the police in Hoboken, N.J., who arrested him on charges he beat an off-duty officer unconscious. Casey was cleared by a grand jury in the incident.
