Costs outweigh benefits in GST threshold debate.

Byline: Sue Mitchell

Mar 31, 2011 (The Australian Financial Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- A Productivity Commission discussion paper has been released on the contentious subject of the goods and services tax (GST) not being charged on imported goods below $A1,000. The average value of imported goods was found to be $A100. Major store retailers complained that existing GST rules gave foreign, internet-based companies an unfair competitive advantage. Any change to the threshold would have to be substantial and would cost taxpayers' money for customs agents to enforce.
