County commission briefs

Life-saving girl's efforts honored
The Shelby County Commission passed a special resolution Monday to honor 12-year-old Lauren Winstead of Collierville, credited with saving two middle-aged men from drowning in rough waters near Florida last month.
Swift current whisked the men from their boat during a swim and Lauren swam out with a ring buoy, keeping them afloat long enough for the Coast Guard to arrive.
The commission and audience gave Lauren a standing ovation.

Commission OKs disaster plan
The Shelby County Commission has passed a detailed plan that describes how it would keep functioning in case of an earthquake or other catastrophic event.
For instance, the plan says that if the county mayor cannot continue to serve for any reason, the chairman of the commission will take over, followed by the chairman pro tempore .
Officials have written that they want the plan to be a living document that changes with the needs of the county.
